Get Involved

Be Active in Your Marketing Community

Volunteering with the Northeast Wisconsin Chapter of the AMA is a great way to get involved. AMA NEW offers members the opportunity to network and build relationships with marketing peers. We are continually looking for members for committee positions, board positions, speaking engagements, event hosting, and other assistance.

AMA NEW volunteers develop a wide array of leadership skills by taking on roles within the organization, which provides experience in areas that may differ from their regular jobs.

Board & Committee opportunities

Strategic Vision: As a member of the board of directors, a volunteer helps shape the chapter's direction by setting goals, creating plans, and aligning activities with the AMA's mission. This cultivates the ability to think strategically and develop a vision for the organization's future.

Decision-Making: Leaders must make critical decisions under pressure, often with limited resources. Board members, like a VP of Finance managing the chapter's budget, must weigh options and make informed decisions that impact the entire chapter.

Delegation and Team Management: A VP of Events, for instance, learns to delegate tasks effectively to other volunteers, manage a team of different skill levels, and ensure everyone has the support they need.

Conflict resolution: Working with people from diverse backgrounds in a volunteer setting provides opportunities to navigate disagreements and manage conflict diplomatically to maintain team morale.

Flexibility and Adaptability: AMA NEW volunteers learn to adapt to changing circumstances, from adjusting event plans to navigating unexpected challenges.

Event & program support

Communication: Volunteers learn to communicate clearly and effectively. This includes verbal communication at events, written communication through marketing materials, and active listening when coordinating with team members and partners.

Problem-Solving: Volunteers can encounter unexpected issues, such as logistical issues at an event. This requires creative and quick problem-solving skills to find innovative solutions.

Public speaking and Presentation: By volunteering to be an event host or speaker, individuals can practice and refine their public speaking skills in a low-stakes environment.

General Volunteer Activities

Mentorship: Experienced volunteers are often asked to mentor new recruits, helping them develop their skills and understand the organization's culture. This process builds valuable mentorship skills.

Motivating Others: Volunteer leaders must motivate people who are not receiving traditional compensation. This experience teaches unique motivational and persuasive skills, as they must inspire team members based on a shared passion.

Networking and Relationship Building: Unlike standard networking events, volunteering creates deeper relationships through shared work and goals. This builds stronger professional and personal connections.

Empathy and Emotional Intelligence: Interacting with a diverse group of people, from students to seasoned professionals, helps volunteers develop empathy and emotional intelligence, which are vital for building trust and leading effectively.

AMA NEW Volunteer-life Balance

Like many busy professionals, we use proactive strategies to manage our time and set clear boundaries to prevent burnout. AMA NEW Leadership is careful to only expect what a volunteer can give, is interested in doing and learning, make it a beneficial experience for the volunteer. By prioritizing effectively and communicating transparently, AMA NEW volunteer partners can balance their volunteer work with their professional and personal commitments.
